ROME (AFP) - Champions Inter Milan were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw away to Bologna in their opening match of the 2010/11 Serie A season on Monday.
In a game delayed due to Inter's European Supercup commitments in Monaco on Friday, the nerazzurri took 45 minutes to wake up and then despite bombarding Bologna's goal in football jersey
the second period, they could find no way through.
If playing last season's treble winners wasn't tough enough already, Bologna's preparations were thrown into disarray on the eve of the match when president Sergio Porcedda sacked coach Franco Colomba and temporarily replaced him with youth team boss Paolo Magnani.
But the hosts showed remarkable resilience, not least from goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano, who made a number of crucial saves, including one with his head.
Although Inter changed coaches in the summer—Rafael Benitez replacing the Real Madrid-bound Jose Mourinho—the starting XI in a 4-4-3 formation came straight from the Portuguese's mould.
However, Inter failed to sparkle and only reached something resembling their own high standards after the interval.
Benitez paid tribute to Viviano's performance but lamented his team's lack of freshness.
"He did very well with his head, with his hands, with everything," joked Benitez.
"In the beginning we had control, we did well but then they had some chances on the counter-attack, but in the second half we did everything we'd spoken about beforehand.
"We're lacking physical condition and then (Bologna) worked well in defence, they were organised and it wasn't easy to find space, but I'm happy with the reaction of my team in the second half.
"We hope to do better in future, we're at the beginning and everyone needs to understand that we must have more of the ball.
"We had some chances, we showed that even away we wanted to win. We had control, we did everything we could but we lacked freshness."

Late on in the half Wesley Sneijder dipped a free-kick just over the bar but Inter had failed to impose themselves on the first period.
After the break the champions started to turn the screw as Goran Pandev headed a Diego Milito cross straight at Viviano who then plunged to his left to keep out a rasping Sneijder drive.
On 73 minutes Viviano made a stunning one-handed save to keep out a Sneijder free-kick and then moments later the stopper saved Bologna again.
Substitute Coutinho crossed to Samuel Eto'o who came flying in to volley goalwards from two yards out but the ball cannoned off the unwitting Viviano's head, onto the bar and away to safety.

Leslie, Bevilaqua show best of an evolving WNBA
LOS ANGELES – Tully Bevilaqua is 5-foot-4 and stretching out in the training room to have her ankles taped before she strides to the court. The arena is all but empty. It’s 6 p.m. here but feels to her like 9 because her Indiana Fever play in Eastern time. She says she could use a little coffee.
Lisa Leslie is 6-foot-5 and perfectly polished. She’s made up for TV nfl jerseys with eye shadow and lip gloss and a sparkling Chanel bracelet. She’s arm-in-arm with her husband as she enters the arena. The crowd is nearly 10,000 strong, and they’re on their feet ushering her in with applause.

Bevilaqua learned to love sports from her older brothers Shane and Vance. They treated her more like another brother than a sister. She was never a star on those championship teams, but she did help give the league an international appeal. On the court, she set the tone for the intensity of the team on defense.
“My game is based around being a blue-collar worker and scrapping and putting my body on the line,” she said. “I’ve been able just to find a role on every team I’ve played for.”
As she’s aged, she’s also found a niche as a leader. In 2007, she earned the league’s Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Award. She is considered one of the most valuable players on the team, even though, at 38, she’s the second-oldest player in the league.
“She sets the tone for us defensively,” Fever coach Lin Dunn said. “She’s always been that tough-nosed, fire-plugged kind of point guard, kind of a bulldog.”
As the league has evolved, Bevilaqua has adjusted her game. She’s had to become more versatile as the talent has improved – and she’s had to score more points as the league has become more offensive-minded. As with most sports, more points leads to more fan support.
“I’m still kind of like that old-school, typical point guard,” she said. “I think we’re still getting to the stage where the point guard becomes one of your more prolific scorers. I’ve kind of had to change to that a little bit – I’ve had to mentally be prepared to put up points.”

Her friends convinced her to try out for the basketball team and she taught herself to be ambidextrous so that she wouldn’t have to stand in the “lefties” line alone. Word about Leslie spread quickly, and she received more than 100 scholarship offers from colleges before Cardinals jersey she started playing high school ball.
When she was a high school sophomore, she dunked for the first time. She decided to stay close to home and play for USC and was an All-American her final three years and National Player of the Year as a senior.
When she finished school, though, there was no WNBA. She signed a modeling contract in New York and dreamed of competing internationally for the United States. Then she got a call – a women’s basketball league was forming.

Chargers’ other wideouts get chance to shine
SAN DIEGO – They made highlight-reel receptions, blowing by corners and snagging footballs with just one hand. The problem was that the San Diego Chargers receivers also stumbled out of breaks and dropped passes with no defenders in sight. This was the first day of nfl throwback jerseys training camp and the receiving corps played like it.
While no unit is expected to be perfect from the get-go, there’s a little more pressure on this particular group as San Diego looks to replace contract holdout Vincent Jackson(notes) – the team’s No. 1 receiver and one of the league’s best deep threats.
Jackson used his huge frame (6-foot-5, 230-pound) and leaping ability to terrorize defenses again last season, averaging an outstanding 17.2 yards per catch. Among the options expected to help fill Jackson’s void is another 6-foot-5 receiver who averaged 17.2 yards per catch last season: Malcom Floyd(notes). The sixth-year target began his career on the practice squad and battled injuries and crowded depth charts before breaking out last season with 45 catches, 776 yards and a touchdown.
“You’ve got to start with Malcom Floyd,” Chargers coach Norv Turner told the team’s website, “who’s having his best camp ever.”
Floyd will be given the first chance to show that he can consistently draw double teams like Jackson did last season. If he can, it’ll help not only him but the rest of the receivers as well.
“I feel like, with me being a deep threat, it naturally pushes a safety toward you,” Floyd said. “I felt a little bit of it last year, and I’m excited to get a couple of more opportunities to do it this season.
“I’ll hold down the fort – while [Jackson]’s gone. But we will miss him.”
Floyd won’t bear the burden alone. The Chargers also have one of the league’s best tight ends in Antonio Gates(notes), who finished with just 10 fewer receiving yards than Jackson last year. In addition, they added veteran Randy McMichael(notes) to the group and have been experimenting with three tight-end sets this offseason.
While Floyd and Gates will be quarterback Philip Rivers’(notes) primary targets this season, replacing Jackson will be the responsibility of every receiver on the field.
“I don’t think anyone is going to have to do anything extra, everyone will just have to be more focused about doing their job,” said receiver Legedu Naane, who will likely start in place of Jackson as the team’s “Z” receiver. “Philip [Rivers] is really good about getting guys the ball if they’re open. And that’s your job. We’re focusing on everyone doing their job and not trying to do too much – that’s where you get in trouble.”
Gates, fresh off a five-year contract extension, agreed. After finishing with a career-best 1,157 yards last season, his focus isn’t on individual attention.
His focus is on helping his team get over the hump and head to a Super Bowl.
“We’ve got guys – Malcom Floyd and Buster Davis and Legedu Naane and Josh Reed(notes) – who can make plays,” Gates said. “Collectively, we try to go out to be the best passing team. We don’t really think of Bills jersey ourselves as individuals.”
It’s easy to have that confidence when you’re playing alongside Rivers, one of the league’s top young passers. In a recent interview, Rivers said that he was relishing in the fact of becoming a stable force for a changing offense – one that will also lack longtime back LaDainian Tomlinson(notes), who’ll be replaced by rookie Ryan Mathews(notes)
“I’m super optimistic about the receivers,” Rivers said. “Reed played a bunch in Buffalo, and we’ve seen the sparks from Buster and Naane. They haven’t been asked to play that role consistently yet, so it’ll be good to see how they respond. They all do things differently – and do them well. Jackson is more, ‘Hey, I’m running by you.’ Naane’s tough after the catch, and Buster can really run.”
Davis has been the biggest disappointment among the receivers. He has struggled to stay healthy and struggled with consistency on the field since being selected in the first round in 2007. His competition with Reed will be one of the more interesting battles for the Chargers during training camp. Reed has been more consistent than Davis, but he has never cracked 600 yards receiving in a single season.
This season will be both of their best opportunities to break out. With Reed on a one-year deal and Davis’ rookie contract running out in two seasons, it could also be their last chance. Davis feels good about his progress.
“I know by the way Philip looks at me in practice,” Davis said, “he wants me out there on Sundays.”

Among the options expected to help fill Jackson’s void is another 6-foot-5 receiver who averaged 17.2 yards per catch last season: Malcom Floyd(notes). The sixth-year target began his career on the practice squad and battled injuries and crowded depth charts before breaking out last season with 45 catches, 776 yards and a touchdown.
“You’ve got to start with Malcom Floyd,” Chargers coach Norv Turner told the team’s website, “who’s having his best camp ever.”
Floyd will be given the first chance to show that he can consistently draw double teams like Jackson did last season. If he can, it’ll help not only him but the rest of the receivers as well.
“I feel like, with me being a deep threat, it naturally pushes a safety toward you,” Floyd said. “I felt a little bit of it last year, and I’m excited to get a couple of more opportunities to do it this season.
“I’ll hold down the fort – while [Jackson]’s gone. But we will miss him.”
Floyd won’t bear the burden alone. The Chargers also have one of the league’s best tight ends in Antonio Gates(notes), who finished with just 10 fewer receiving yards than Jackson last year. In addition, they added veteran Randy McMichael(notes) to the group and have been experimenting with three tight-end sets this offseason.
While Floyd and Gates will be quarterback Philip Rivers’(notes) primary targets this season, replacing Jackson will be the responsibility of every receiver on the field.
“I don’t think anyone is going to have to do anything extra, everyone will just have to be more focused about doing their job,” said receiver Legedu Naane, who will likely start in place of Jackson as the team’s “Z” receiver. “Philip [Rivers] is really good about getting guys the ball if they’re open. And that’s your job. We’re focusing on everyone doing their job and not trying to do too much – that’s where you get in trouble.”
Gates, fresh off a five-year contract extension, agreed. After finishing with a career-best 1,157 yards last season, his focus isn’t on individual attention.
His focus is on helping his team get over the hump and head to a Super Bowl.
“We’ve got guys – Malcom Floyd and Buster Davis and Legedu Naane and Josh Reed(notes) – who can make plays,” Gates said. “Collectively, we try to go out to be the best passing team. We don’t really think of Bills jersey ourselves as individuals.”
It’s easy to have that confidence when you’re playing alongside Rivers, one of the league’s top young passers. In a recent interview, Rivers said that he was relishing in the fact of becoming a stable force for a changing offense – one that will also lack longtime back LaDainian Tomlinson(notes), who’ll be replaced by rookie Ryan Mathews(notes)
“I’m super optimistic about the receivers,” Rivers said. “Reed played a bunch in Buffalo, and we’ve seen the sparks from Buster and Naane. They haven’t been asked to play that role consistently yet, so it’ll be good to see how they respond. They all do things differently – and do them well. Jackson is more, ‘Hey, I’m running by you.’ Naane’s tough after the catch, and Buster can really run.”
Davis has been the biggest disappointment among the receivers. He has struggled to stay healthy and struggled with consistency on the field since being selected in the first round in 2007. His competition with Reed will be one of the more interesting battles for the Chargers during training camp. Reed has been more consistent than Davis, but he has never cracked 600 yards receiving in a single season.
This season will be both of their best opportunities to break out. With Reed on a one-year deal and Davis’ rookie contract running out in two seasons, it could also be their last chance. Davis feels good about his progress.
“I know by the way Philip looks at me in practice,” Davis said, “he wants me out there on Sundays.”

State attorney general wins judgment against loan company
The state Justice Department has won a $111,861 judgment against Relief Law Center Inc. for violating consumer protection laws, Attorney General J.B. nfl throwback jerseys Van Hollen said Friday.

State waiver for overseas ballots denied
Madison — The U.S. Defense Department has denied Wisconsin's request for a one-time release from a new federal law that requires absentee ballots to be sent to military and other overseas voters 45 days before election day.
Reid Magney, a spokesman for the state Government Accountability Board, said the denial shouldn't lead to a change in the date of football jerseys Wisconsin's Sept. 14 primary elections - a move that would normally require an action of the Legislature and probably would prove a logistical nightmare for local clerks.
"It's too late to do that," Magney said. "It is impossible to move the primary."
State officials, who had expected to have their waiver request approved, still aren't sure what they may have to do to comply with the law. The federal MOVE Act requires absentee ballots to be sent to military and other overseas voters with enough time for them to be filled out and returned.
But there are only 49 days between Wisconsin's Sept. 14 primary, which falls late in the year compared with those of most other states, and the Nov. 2 general election.
That leaves too little time for local clerks to mop up after the primary, handle any possible recounts and send out absentee ballots for the general election, Magney said.
"Because of the time that it takes to count the votes for the primary, to certify the election and to prepare the ballots, generally absentee ballots are available in Wisconsin 30 days before the election," Magney said.
He said the state was in touch with the U.S. Department of Philadelphia Eagles jersey Justice to see what it needs to do to comply with the law.
Of the 6,742 absentee ballots that were returned from voters overseas in the 2008 presidential election, only 246, or less than 4%, were rejected. A request for further comment made to a Department of Defense spokeswoman was not returned.

Manning then hurried his team to the line without a huddle, took a quick snap in shotgun, looked off the defense to the left, then connected with Pierre Garcon(notes), who was alone in the end zone on the right. Garcon had darted straight through zone coverage, then found the ball waiting for him. Simple, really. Two plays, 67 yards, six points, 22 seconds elapsed. Naturally, the Packers offense tied the game on their opening drive, because it’s a robotic menace that cannot be stopped. Aaron Rodgers(notes) connected with Donald Driver(notes) on a 6-yard score, one play after receiver James Jones(notes) drew a 48-yard pass interference penalty. The touchdown was Rodgers’ fourth of the preseason on just his 26th pass attempt. By the time Rodgers departed the game after two quarters, he’d added his fifth and sixth passing TDs of the exhibition season. He dissected the Colts, going 21-for-29 for 195 yards.
Following the game, Rodgers had this to say: “I just didn’t like our rhythm tonight.”
That is where the Green Bay offense is at, two weeks in advance of its regular-season opener at Philadelphia. Rodgers’ team scored 28 first-half points against the defending AFC champs, eventually beating the Colts 59-24, and he didn’t particularly care for the offensive rhythm.
The media loves to re-tell the Aaron Rodgers story – too often it’s presented as a subhead within the Brett Favre(notes) story – but the truth is, he’s no longer a variable. Instead, he’s a known quantity. Rodgers is as dominant, as skilled, and as efficient as any quarterback in today’s NFL. He’s Exhibit A in the case for the Packers’ legitimacy as a Super Bowl contender. If you think Rodgers has something left to prove, then you haven’t been paying attention.
The Green Bay defense, on the other hand, still has a few questions to answer.
Sure, that unit ranked second in the NFL last year, allowing only 284.4 yards per game. The Packers also had the NFL’s top run defense (83.3 YPG) and they led all teams in total takeaways (40). The regular-season stats were outstanding, particularly when you consider that it was Green Bay’s first year in coordinator Dom Capers’ scheme. Cornerback Charles Woodson(notes) was the AP’s NFL Defensive Player of the Year following a nine-interception campaign, and Capers himself won the Sporting News’ Coordinator of the Year award. The Packers allowed just 15.6 points per game in the second half of the season, winning seven of their final eight games. Rookie outside linebacker Clay Matthews(notes) emerged as a brilliant edge rusher (10 sacks), and inside linebacker Nick Barnett(notes) led the team in tackles (106), demonstrating that he’d recovered from an ACL injury suffered in 2008.
The Pack’s D had the numbers, no question, and they collected plenty of nfl throwback jerseys individual trophies. All things considered, it was an excellent season – until Jan. 10.
Kurt Warner(notes) and the Cardinals eviscerated Green Bay’s defense in the wild-card round. The Packers allowed 531 total yards and an average of 11 yards per pass play. Warner somehow finished the game with more touchdown passes (five) than incompletions (four). The Cardinals won an overtime epic, 51-45. If you enjoy missed tackles and missed calls, then it was an all-timer. The defeat left the Packers dazed, and the game casts a shadow long enough to reach into August.
At halftime of the preseason matchup with the Colts, Barnett said, “One of our biggest challenges is facing these good quarterbacks like [Manning], and we have to show we can do it.”
The implication, clearly, is that the Packers defense demonstrated no competence against the good quarterbacks last season. Favre torched them twice, throwing seven touchdown passes and no interceptions while totaling 515 yards in two thoroughly hyped contests. Ben Roethlisberger(notes) shredded Green Bay in Week 15, completing 29 of 46 attempts for a ridiculous 503 yards, three scores and no picks. And, of course, there was the disaster in the desert.
So Barnett is right: If the plan is for the Packers to make it to suburban Dallas for Super Bowl XLV, then sooner or later they’ll have to figure out how to stop an elite quarterback. (You’d think they’d benefit from facing one every day in practice). For the first quarter-and-a-half of the preseason faceoff against Indy, Green Bay’s defense couldn’t disrupt Manning.
The Colts’ QB led a second scoring drive in the first quarter, highlighted by a pair of second-and-long completions to Reggie Wayne(notes), both of which resulted in first downs (and both of which victimized Packers corner Tramon Williams(notes)). On the last play of the quarter, Manning stepped away from a light pass rush and connected with Addai on a 33-yard gain. Two snaps later, Williams was beaten inside by Wayne on a slant for a 10-yard score. The Colts led 17-7.
Rodgers answered with a TD pass to tight end Jermichael Finley(notes), of course. The Packers offense always answers. It’s ruthlessly productive.
On the Colts’ next drive – after two short completions and a personal foul penalty on Barnett – Green Bay finally dialed up some pressure, achieving the intended results. The defense forced a pair of incompletions and eventually a punt. Capers has deliberately avoided putting exotic blitzes on tape throughout the preseason, for obvious reasons, but Manning wasn’t exactly unnerved by bland four-man rushes.
When Indianapolis received the ball back – following a special teams TD by Green Bay – the Packers kept pressuring. Woodson blitzed from the left as Manning threw incomplete to tight end Brody Eldridge(notes). Then, on 2nd-and-10, Woodson came again from the right. Manning fired a short pass to the spot Woodson had vacated, but rookie safety Morgan Burnett(notes) jumped in front of the intended receiver and picked off the throw.
It’s only preseason, obviously, but any success the Packers can find against a quarterback of Manning’s quality seems significant. Green Bay managed to force a Manning fumble on the Colts’ first drive of the third quarter, too.
“That’s a great feeling,” said Burnett of authentic nfl jerseys his pick. “I’m just very thankful and blessed right now.”
“It felt great,” said second-year nose tackle B.J. Raji(notes), echoing the blessedness.
Listed at 6-foot-2 and 337 pounds, Raji can be a force in the middle, the anchor of an excellent defensive line. He’s plenty capable of invading the backfield and relocating the line of scrimmage. Raji destroyed a screen pass to Wayne in the first quarter versus Indy, dropping the Pro Bowl receiver for a 4-yard loss. But he was also erased on Addai’s big run to open the game.
“Gap control,” Raji said flatly, when asked about the play. “He’s a pretty elusive back, and when you don’t take care of your responsibilities, things like that can happen. The second play that they scored on was just miscommunication out there. Once we got that communication down, things got better.”
They did not get so much better that head coach Mike McCarthy was satisfied, but that’s no great surprise, not in August. In his postgame comments, McCarthy made reference to the fact that his defense was without Matthews (hamstring), defensive end Cullen Jenkins(notes) (calf), safety Atari Bigby(notes) (ankle) and corner Al Harris(notes) (knee).
“Well,” he said, “defensively we haven’t played the game with everybody on the field yet so the continuity is probably not where we’d like it to be right now. And that’s something that we’re probably going to have to establish in our practice structure leading up to the Philadelphia game.
“The injuries have kind of kept us from getting the continuity that you would like.”
Matthews and Jenkins aren’t believed to be in danger of missing the opener, though, and Bigby will be replaced by Burnett, a ball-hawker coming off a statement game. Williams figures to start at corner opposite Woodson, and … well, let’s just say he’s lucky that he won’t see Wayne again this season, not unless the Colts and Packers meet in February.
But good luck finding a member of Green Bay’s defense who’s willing to look six months ahead.
“Aw, I’m trying to take it week to week,” Raji said. “It’s still the preseason. There’s a long way to go. If you start thinking Super Bowl now, then you’re not really doing your job, not really staying focused.”
We know, without any doubt, that the Packers will have a ridiculous, Nintendo-style offense this year. Rodgers is 41-for-53 after three preseason games, with 470 passing yards, six touchdowns, zero picks and zero sacks. He’s as good as it gets. In the wild-card game at Arizona, he delivered 423 yards, four passing TDs, one rushing TD, and 45 points – and his team still lost, because the opponent scored 51. The success of the 2010 team is squarely on the defense’s shoulders.
“We can be a pretty good defense, no matter who we play,” asserts Raji. “A lot of times – and not taking anything away from teams – when you don’t execute from the jump, it’s a lot harder for you to get things going on defense.
