Investment in market share in 1990 were too timid

have continued with substantial risks to turn around the financial markets many are reluctant to invest today. But always remember to share markets face uncertainty - the risk is a fact of life to invest. If you go back 20 years, things are much worse in 1990 than nfl throwback jerseys
they are now, and the markets have done well since. 2010 may seem difficult, but in 1990 was not for investors, employees, or simple. Taking into account the situation in the free section Dominion could fit on a page, simply finding a job was a success. The unemployment rate was 8.9% in 1990, collapse of the commercial property prices, GDP will contract and we were in recession. Inflation was 7.9% and the variable-rate mortgage rose to 14.9%. Our market share had half the value in the last three years has fallen. Then, just as you thought it could not get much worse, in August 1990 Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait, to our market share of 30%. Soon after the need for recapitalization by the government BNZ. Then we are confronted by what is the United Kingdom today, massive budget cuts came, it is necessary to fix a very sick looking public budgets. Our economy, which has already been canceled. GDP by 2% and unemployment was 11%. It was the time. Amid all this terrible news, the market shares in New Zealand means quiet in early February 1991 - the memory was, or shortly thereafter, the day the Americans crossed the border into Kuwait.
People who had had the strength to invest in equities during this whirlwind of bad news from the year 1990 a good run in the last 20 years. rose in New Zealand by 320%, house prices in New Zealand by 380% and 565% Australian shares an impressive win. In fact, all assets have done well. Bonds represented by deposits here in six months, returned 6.8% per year before tax and 4.8% per year after taxes, is still far from inflation, increased 2.2% per year.
For now, what is the probability that the returns over the next 20 years is similar to last 20 years? Today, in 1990, investors have reason to worry. Sovereign risk, debt, budget deficits, inflation, deflation, war, real estate prices low, rising interest rates, volatile stock markets, oil spills, etc.
It is impossible to predict the impact of this on the markets and the future performance, but we did one year to 8% of the shares and real estate, fixed income and maybe a 6%. Some readers of this decline. After all, investment returns in stocks and real estate with the hope of only 8%?
I hope for more than 8% of capital gain on my part. But I know that fighting the market to me even more.
Any additional changes will come from stock selection of New Orleans Saints jersey
good quality and to bring the patience and the power cost in these struggles inevitable market downturn, when good companies, such as infants, often discarded with the bath water.
We just do investors accept this new reality. When it comes to return capital return of 7.5% is the new 10%. Many investors are still struggling to find Chasing Rainbows try some alternative investments such as hedge funds, products and anything that potentially offer something like Return-style 1990-'10% could risk. It seems that some people something to prevent the acquisition of shares do.
But stocks still offer decent value. Dividend yields are often higher than deposit rates, and are in good quality companies should be able to increase performance over time.
Considered and cautious approach is important, but investors who buy less by little, you try to use periods of market weakness to his advantage to the business of good quality to make long-term vision and above all realistic expectations, you can invest continue to shares with a reasonable degree of confidence.
Of course in the coming years will see the usual mix of volatility, risk and events of fear, but in 2030, 2010 could end up much today to 1,990.

Cardinals relieved to get win over Oakland

Cowboys jersey
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP)—Standing on the sideline after Oakland kicker Sebastian Janikowski(notes) let a short, potential game-winning field goal fly, Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt couldn’t believe what he saw.
A 90 percent kicker from inside 40 yards, Janikowski had pushed the kick left as time expired.
“I was thinking he missed it, he missed it, but I wasn’t sure until the football jerseys
officials gave the signal,” Whisenhunt said Monday.
The officials, after a slight-but-agonizing delay, did give the signal for the miss Whisenhunt and the rest of the Cardinals didn’t expect but were glad to have.
Oakland coach Tom Cable, anticipating Janikowski splitting the uprights, walked onto the field screaming, fist in the air, only to turn slump-shouldered back to the bench.
Across the field, Whisenhunt went from hopeful to exuberant in an instant, his players and coaches rushing past.
One errant swipe of Janikowski’s left foot and Arizona had held on for a 24-23 win after another so-so performance from quarterback Derek Anderson(notes) and not just one, but two punts that caromed off unsuspecting players.
Yeah, the Cardinals were feeling pretty fortunate to be 2-1 instead of the other way around.
“Obviously, happy we got the win,” Whisenhunt said with a slight chuckle. “It’s a lot easier to continue to work on getting better when you’re in a little better frame of mind, so that was a good thing.”
The Cardinals at least got off to a great start; LaRod Stephens-Howling(notes) returned the opening kickoff 102 yards for a touchdown.
After that, Arizona slogged its way through a not-always-pretty game that came down to Janikowski’s fate-turning kick.
Defensively, the Cardinals were solid, getting a big goal-line stand in the fourth quarter and holding the Raiders to field goals after the two miscues on the punt returns.
The two special-team gaffes were frustrating, the first was probably unavoidable. Raiders punter Shane Lechler(notes) didn’t hit the ball very well and it bounced off the legs of Matt Ware(notes), who was trying to set up a block for returner Andre Roberts(notes).
The second one was probably Roberts’ fault. The rookie was set up too deep and didn’t do Indianapolis Colts jersey
a very good job of warning his teammates that the ball was short and it hit Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie(notes). Oakland recovered both miscues and now the Cardinals might be looking for a new returner.
Bad as those mistakes were, at least they’re easy to fix.
The offense’s continuing struggles are a little tougher to smooth over.
Arizona hasn’t been able to generate much of anything offensively this season and misfired most of the day against the Raiders, managing just 227 total yards.
Running back Beanie Wells(notes) gave the Cardinals a spark, gaining 75 yards on 14 attempts after missing the first two games because of arthroscopic knee surgery.
Anderson, though, continued his trend of inconsistency.
He missed badly on several throws early, including a couple that might have led to touchdowns, and finished 12 of 26 for 122 yards with an interception. Anderson did throw two touchdown passes, the 8-yarder to Larry Fitzgerald(notes) in the third quarter becoming the eventual decisive score, but the Cardinals need to see more stability from the quarterback who led them to run Matt Leinart(notes) out of the desert.
“Obviously, Derek needs to improve and he’ll tell you that,” Whisenhunt said. “I think he played a little better in the second half for us, but there were some things he missed in the first half we’ve got to improve on. We can’t miss those plays, we can’t leave them on the field.”
Some of the miscues might be expected, even for the two-time defending NFC West champions. This year’s team is young, full of new faces in key places, everyone still trying to find that meshing mojo the previous two teams had.
Still, Arizona needs to get in synch quickly, clean up those miscues with a road game Dallas Cowboys jersey
against San Diego next, followed by defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans at home.
The good news is the Cardinals found a way to pull out the win against the Raiders, even if there was a little luck involved—2-1 feels a whole lot better than 1-2.
“Any win is good, no matter what,” Wells said. “When the win-loss ratio is there, nobody looks at how you won the game, only that you got the win.”

Vick accounts for 4 TDs, Eagles rout Jags 28-3

Colts jersey
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP)—Michael Vick(notes) sparked a rally against Green Bay, dismantled Detroit and picked apart Jacksonville.
What does he have left to prove?
Maybe nothing—until some guy named Donovan McNabb(notes) returns to Philadelphia next week. For now, though, Vick made Andy Reid’s quarterback decision look like the right one.
Vick threw three touchdown passes, ran for another score and led the nfl throwback jerseys
Eagles to a 28-3 victory over the Jaguars on Sunday.
“He played his heart out today, so it’s more about him than me or anybody else,” Reid said. “It’s a tribute to what he’s done and how he’s handled things.”
Vick completed 17 of 31 passes for 291 yards, mostly staying in the pocket and dissecting Jacksonville’s beleaguered secondary. One of the few times he did run, he broke a tackle, juked another defender and scored from 17 yards.
Vick found DeSean Jackson(notes) for a 61-yard touchdown and hooked up with Jeremy Maclin(notes) for two scores. Jackson finished with five catches for 153 yards, Maclin had four receptions for 83 yards, and the Eagles (2-1) improved to 2-0 with Vick as their starter.
“I moved on Thursday with all the hoopla that was going on,” Vick said. “I understand the circumstances and the reason for all the talk. … It is a sigh of relief to move on and not talk about it anymore.”
Vick became the latest in a growing list of quarterbacks to torch the Jaguars (1-2). Denver’s Kyle Orton(notes) and San Diego’s Philip Rivers(notes) burned them repeatedly for big gains the last two weeks.
Jacksonville fans headed to the exits early in the fourth quarter, with their team trailing by 25 points and having seen enough of David Garrard(notes).
Garrard, benched last week after throwing four interceptions against the Chargers, was even worse against Philadelphia. Yes, worse. Although Garrard threw just one interception, he tossed up at least four more balls that could have been picked.
“He was ineffective today,” coach Jack Del Rio said.
Garrard finished 13 of 30 for 105 yards and was sacked six times. Trent Cole(notes) and his defensive teammates abused Jaguars offensive tackles Eugene Monroe(notes) and Eben Britton(notes) early and often, getting the kind of steady pressure that gives Garrard trouble.
“We could never get a rhythm going, we could never get anything going really in Chargers jersey
the pass game,” Garrard said.
Garrard finished with a passer rating of 38.9, even lower than last week’s 62.7 mark.
“We have to figure out something ASAP,” said Maurice Jones-Drew(notes), who ran for 88 yards. “We’re not doing anything right.”
Vick offered plenty of answers to anyone who criticized Reid’s decision to go with him over Kevin Kolb(notes).
Reid had insisted Kolb would start when he returned from a concussion. But Vick’s play prompted Reid to reverse field and stick with Vick, saying the shifty left-hander gives Philadelphia a better chance to win.
He sure did against Jacksonville.
“I always believed I could come back and play quarterback,” said Vick, who missed two years while serving time for his role in a dogfighting operation. “It was all about me getting an opportunity and I got it and it’s time to make the most of it.”
The Eagles scored early and late in the first half, with Vick converting third-and-long plays on both drives. He stayed in the pocket on third-and-16 and dropped a perfect pass over cornerback Michael Coe’s(notes) outstretched arms and into Jackson’s hands.
Jackson turned up the sideline and went untouched for 61 yards.
Vick was nearly as precise in the two-minute drill just before halftime. He found Brent Celek(notes) down the middle for a 22-yard gain despite facing a coverage scheme that included seven defensive backs. He hooked up with Maclin for 14 yards, then again on a 16-yard score with 4 seconds remaining.
His best pass may have come in the third quarter, when he zipped one down the sideline to Maclin for a 45-yard score that made it 21-3.
Vick now gets to spend a week talking about McNabb, Philadelphia’s longtime starter whose offseason departure helped pave the way for Vick’s return. But he wasn’t ready to discuss it Sunday.
“I’m not getting involved in that,” he said. “I’m not getting involved in Donovan Bears jersey
McNabb-Mike Vick controversy.”
NOTES: Vick’s passing yardage is the fourth-highest total of his career. … Cole had two sacks for his 13th-career multi-sack game. … The Jaguars benched struggling CB Derek Cox(notes) for the second straight week. His replacement, David Jones(notes), got beat for two big pass plays. … Garrard’s 105 yards passing are his fewest since getting knocked out of a game early against Indianapolis in 2007. … This is the first time since 2007 that Jones-Drew hasn’t scored in the first three games.

26 sep 10 Defense continues to deliver

If you want to sum up the performance by the Steelers defense on Sunday, the best way to do so would be listening to what Titans quarterback Vince Young had to say.
“They did some things that I haven’t seen before,” said Young after the Steelers 19-11 win in Tennessee.
That is something that this defense nfl jerseys
takes pride in, bringing a new look each week that defensive coordinator Dick Labia draws up, showing opponents something that they might not have seen on tape and using it to their advantage.
The defense created seven turnovers, the most since they had seven takeaways against Baltimore in 1997. They got production up and down the line-up, from Pro Bowl safety Troy Palatal to defensive end Steve McClendon, who was signed off the practice squad the day before the game.
“Everybody knows their role and plays their part, does their assignment,” said cornerback Bryant McFadden , who had an interception. “The coaches do a great job preparing us each week. The rest is playing hard, physical and violent football.
“Coach (Mike) Tomlin says he wants a violent team out there; a violent team that plays within the rules. We want to be attackers. We want to throw our bodies around and play without a seat belt. We don’t drive the speed limit; we don’t wear a seat belt when we are out there playing.”
The way the defense is playing right now is reminiscent of a defense of Steelers jersey
the not so distant past – the 2008 version. Last year the defense let some games go in the fourth quarter. This year, like in 2008, they are doing their best to make sure that isn’t the case. Steelers jersey

“That is what we are trying to get back,” said defensive end Aaron Smith . “Last year we had some games where we let teams pull it out at the end. That’s where we need to get. That’s the type of mentality we have to have, to want to finish games and want the game in our hands and be able to put teams away.”
The Titans mounted a late surge against the Steelers, scoring a touchdown with just 58 seconds left on the clock. They were able to get the onside kick, but the defense wasn’t about to falter, holding on strong until the end.
“For us to be a good team we are going to be put in situations where we have to close out the ball game,” said McFadden. “We have held up our own. We know we have to do that. We are just trying to make sure we start the season fast and finish even faster and be consistent and maintain this throughout the year.”
The defense has a trust in each other, one built on a bond that the players have on and off the field. They are a close unit, there for each through good and bad, in football and in life.
“I don’t think people understand how close we are,” said Taylor. “You Vikings jersey
can tell on the field by the body language how close we are.
“When you have 11 guys who play for one goal and that is to be the best, no egos, just buying into what Coach Labia is trying to do, it’s a good time every time we go out there and play defense.”

To ESPN analyst Ron Gasworks, Brett Fare looks like the same QB he was a year ago

Without proper context, Brett Fare’s 40-year-old skills diminish with every interception and every Vikings loss.
Ron Gasworks turns on Vikings game video and sees 'absolutely no difference' in Fare’s ability despite four interceptions and a 0-2 start. From arm strength to footwork, everything checks out from one quarterback to another.
Gasworks sees problems around Fare entering Sunday's noon game with the Lions in the Metronome.
'Maybe a couple of missed hot routes or a couple of nfl jerseys
bad breaks with interceptions, but his level of confidence throwing the ball the first few weeks has been great,' said Gasworks, an ESPN analyst and former NFL quarterback. 'The offensive line has to become a lot more firm. Brett is not getting the protection he needs. He's a guy in duress.'
Fare is missing the rhythm that carried him through last season, when he threw 33 touchdown passes and seven interceptions during what felt like a special season from the beginning. His numbers through two games this season -- 37-of-63 passing, 396 yards, one touchdown -- pale in comparison to last year's early-season game manager who completed 77 percent of his passes with no turnovers against Cleveland and Detroit.
Promising drives are plagued by turnovers, and Percy Hardin’s six catches are the most by a wide receiver. The team's leader is tight end Visa the since with 10. Receiver Bernard Berrien has had trouble connecting with Fare on deep balls.
The offensive line has given up four sacks and allowed the Miami Dolphins to penetrate the line of scrimmage consistently off the edge in last week's 14-10 loss.
Fare is placing blame on his shoulders, saying his play is "not good enough" while pushing his offense this week. Fare said he missed his usual Wednesday news conference because he didn't want to be late to an offensive meeting, something that might have come with a "free pass" in the past.
During individual drills Thursday, Fare examined the routes of Berrien and Hardin and talked them through scenarios on the field.
"I don't want to raise red flags, (but) we've got to get on the same page because we're 0-2," Fare said. "A lot of work is left, and it will be an ongoing process until we have our unit how we want to go about things."
It's easy to peg the slow start on the loss of Pro Bowl receiver Steelers jersey
Sidney Rice, who will miss half the season or more while recovering from hip surgery. But Rice was quiet early last year, catching five passes for 46 yards through the first two games. He recorded his first 100-yard game against Baltimore in Week 6.
Moving parts have been an issue. Receiver Greg Camarillo (two catches, 32 yards) is new to the offense after a preseason trade from Miami, and Hardin missed most of training camp because of migraines.
Hank Basket is the newest addition at receiver, but he's been on the Winter Park campus for only two practices. The Vikings flirted with Pro Bowl receiver Vincent Jackson but couldn't solidify a trade that satisfied the San Diego Chargers.
When assessing the past two weeks, Fare points to lack of timing with his receivers -- missing training camp didn't help -- and his tendency to press when he gets impatient.
Never was that more evident than against the Dolphins, when Fare threw two interceptions into congested areas. Both passes were intended for Berrien.
"I think that's what's made me the quarterback that I am and benefited me throughout my career, but it's also hurt me," Fare said. "It's hard to be patient to get this puzzle piece together. We're doing it as we play ... the guys that we have, I included -- we have to make it work."
Gasworks said teams are showing wide blitzes on the Vikings to pressure tackles Phil Loophole and Bryant McKinney. The Vikings are on pace to allow 32 sacks, two shy of last year's 34.
If Fare can buy enough time to get off clean throws, the Vikings could be rewarded against a Lions secondary that ranks 30th in the league, allowing 304.5 passing yards per game.Indianapolis Colts jersey

Training camp is where quarterbacks "develop feel" with receivers, Gasworks said, which might explain Fare’s heavy reliance on since. Tight ends are the ultimate bailout target for struggling quarterbacks.
Fare has targeted Since 16 times this season, four more than any other Vikings pass catcher.
"If they had two or three more weeks together, things might be different," Gasworks said. "The chemistry is so critical, and clearly it's lacking right now. But they still have enough skill in that offense to turn it around and make the playoffs."
Fare hasn't changed much from his first full season with the Vikings, coach Brad Childress said. He still knows the scouting reports, prepares for the Tuesday film study, pops in and out of the facility at night and "always has suggestions" about personnel and offensive concepts.
What has changed is the comfort the Vikings' offense Vikings jersey
carries into every day because of uncertainty hovering over the passing game.
"If I sat here and told you I know exactly what we're doing right now, I'd be lying," Fare said.

24 sep 10 Bills vote in favor of decertification, bracing for lockout

The Buffalo Bills' players have become the seventh team to vote in favor of decertification if a collective bargaining agreement can't be brokered between the NFL Players Association and NFL owners.
A vote was held tonight at a meeting with NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith, and it was unanimous according to Bills safety and union representative George Wilson(notes).
"Beyond a shadow of a doubt," Wilson told ESPN.com about the possibility of nfl throwback jerseys
a lockout. "With everything the NFL has done, they're positioning for a lockout. We don't want to be locked out, but we have to prepare like we're going to be locked out. We have to prepare for the worst-case scenario.
"I've tried to let my guys know in the locker room that this is not a game. This is dollars and cents, and when it's about money it's going to take a long time. I'm telling my guys to save, save, save. Minimize your debt. Prepare your families."
The Detroit Lions are still working over the bottom third of their roster.
To that end, they continue to look at players on the street who could potentially be of more use to them than some of the guys currently using lockers.
Per an NFL source, the Lions rolled five players through their Allen Park, Mich., facility for visits this week. That group was headlined by four defensive backs. The Lions signed veteran cornerback Nathan Vasher(notes) last week, and this week they brought in Quintin Demps(notes), Macho Harris(notes), Chevis Jackson(notes) and Karl Paymah(notes) for a look. Demps and Harris are both castoffs from the Philadelphia Eagles, the team that topped the Lions 35-32 on Sunday at Ford Field.
Indianapolis Colts running back Joseph Addai(notes) and middle linebacker Gary Brackett(notes) didn't practice today due to knee and back injuries, respectively.
Also not practicing: defenive end Dwight Freeney(notes) (non-injury related), tackle Charlie Johnson(notes) (sprained right foot) and linebacker Clint Session(notes) (hamstring).
The Colts already ruled out wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez(notes) (ankle), linebacker Ramon Humber(notes) (hand) and safety Bob Sanders(notes) (torn biceps tendon).
Wide receiver Pierre Garcon(notes) (hamstring) and center Jeff Saturday(notes) (knee) were limited.
Cornerback Jerraud Powers (foot) participated fully.
The Colts recently waived offensive lineman Tony Ugoh(notes) Saints jersey
from injured reserve.
Although quarterback Jake Delhomme(notes) didn't practice today due to an ankle injury that sidelined him against the Kansas City Chiefs, Cleveland Browns coach Eric Mangini is holding out hope tht he might be available for Sunday's game against the Baltimore Ravens.
Five starters didn't practice today for Cleveland.
That includes Delhomme (ankle), running back Jerome Harrison(notes) (thigh), wide receiver Brian Robiskie(notes) (hamstring), nose guard Shaun Rogers(notes) (ankle, hip) and defensive end Robaire Smith(notes) (ankle).
Seneca Wallace(notes) might start again for the Browns after completing 16 of 31 passes for 229 yards with one touchdown and an interception in a loss to the Chiefs.
“Jake’s gotten better, and I’m optimistic about where he is,” Mangini said during a conference call today with Baltimore reporters. “Now we’ve got to take it day-by-day with this like we did last week. With both quarterbacks, I’m comfortable they can run any of the calls that we have. But what we do with our quarterbacks, which I’m sure they do the same thing in Baltimore or anywhere else, is you cater the game plan to the things they do well.Pittsburgh Steelers jersey

“And you work with the quarterback because he’s the guy that has to make decisions on the field, to make sure he’s comfortable with the call and comfortable with the plan. So it’s a collaborative process, and we have some plays that Seneca may like better than Jake and vice versa. But you plan for both.”
Offenisve guard Shawn Lauvao(notes) (ankle), tight end Evan New Orleans Saints jersey
Moore(notes) (head) and cornerback Derrick Roberson(notes) (hip) didn't practice.
The following starters were limited: linebacker D'Qwell Jackson(notes) (chest), outside linebacker Matt Roth(notes) (foot) and guard Floyd Womack(notes) (knee).

MLS Playoff Picture: Los Angeles Galaxy Ready To Dance

Dallas Cowboys jersey
Oh, hi there. My name is Mike Beauvais. I’m the guy who covers Toronto FC around these parts, but leading up to the playoffs, I’m going to be doing something a little bit different. Starting with this column, every week I’m going to be looking at how football jersey
this thing is breaking down – who’s fighting for the Supporters’ Shield, who’s a virtual lock, who’s fighting for their lives, and who should be looking forward to 2011.

So, join me, won’t you?

Right now, these 2010 MLS playoffs stand to have more crossover than Tim Hardaway driving the lane. With only two spots guaranteed per conference and the remaining four wild cards open for the next best clubs, six of the eight playoff teams look to be from the Western Conference. What does that mean (other than that, save for Columbus and New York, the East has been woefully awful)? Well, the teams that finish in fifth and sixth in the West (right now, that’s Colorado and Seattle) will move over to the “Eastern” bracket. Even in the event that the crossover clubs have a better record than the Eastern playoff teams, they will still be seeded lower than the Eastern pair.
With that slightly confusing piece of business taken care of, it’s time to examine the race.

Supporters’ Shield Contenders

1. Los Angeles Galaxy (QUALIFIED), 50 Points, 5 Games Remaining – Up Next: New York (H) – By virtue of a late double from Landycakes on Saturday night versus D.C. United, the defending Western Conference champions became the first team to qualify for the 2010 playoffs with a 2-1 victory.

While first overall, the Galaxy by no means has the Supporters’ Shield wrapped up. Their lead on RSL sits at three points, but it’s the upcoming schedule that should be of concern: three of their final five matches are against playoff teams.

This is a team that knows it can win it all, so a shaky run-in to the post-season is not something LA will hope for. Even with the spot clinched, now is not the time for Bruce Arena’s men to take their foot off the gas and a signature win over the Red Bulls on Friday would go a long way for the Galaxy to signal its intent. The Galaxy remain the team to beat.
2. Real Salt Lake, 47 Points, 5 Games Remaining – Up Next: Colorado (H) – Kyle Beckerman and co. clearly have developed a taste for silverware. A year after winning the MLS Cup, the holders are looking to add another trophy to the case with the Supporters’ Shield. Much like the club they’re chasing, though, Real’s run-up to the playoffs could be a thorny one with 80% of their remaining schedule against playoff teams. Compounding matters is RSL’s continued participation in the CONCACAF Champions League, including a tilt on Wednesday night in Panama versus Arabe Unido. If their previous CCL away match was any indication of things to come, they might want to have a lifeguard on duty. With the playoffs a virtual certainty, it will be Jason Kreis’ job to make sure that his men aren’t worn too thin.
3. Columbus Crew, 44 Points, 5 Games Remaining – Up Next: New England (A) – The less said about Saturday’s embarrassing home performance against Blaise Nkufo and the Sounders the better. What’s worse than the club’s humbling defeat to former manager Sigi Schmid and Seattle is the fact that the sophomore Sounders could very well be the Crew’s opening round playoff opponents. With their hold on first in the East over NYRB at three points, the Crew’s remaining schedule features three matches against desperate clubs (the Earthquakes, Fire, and TFC) bookended by games with teams looking forward to next season (the Revs and Union), as well as Champions League participation. Much like Jason Kreis, Robert Warzycha faces the daunting challenge of keeping his men fit in yet another period of congested fixtures.
4. FC Dallas, 42 Points, 6 Games Remaining – Up Next: New England (H) – It took losing Brek Shea (what was he thinking on that tackle?) to a red for the Hoops to concede for the first time in four matches last Thursday versus New York Red Bulls. In a match that will be remembered for that bizarre Thierry Henry/Kevin Hartman incident, FCD show tremendous grittiness and resolve and proved why they should be a handful for whoever their playoff opponent might be. That’s the thing, though: it’s far too premature to figure out who that is. While a playoff appearance is almost a certainty barring an epic 2008 Mets-like late season collapse, the Hoops’ remaining dance card is a daunting one with five of their six remaining matches against teams in the playoffs or pushing for a spot. A good run-in and Dallas might finish as a top seed in the West. With dropped points, though, the Hoops could very well find themselves as a crossover team taking on those same New York Red Bulls.
Get Your Playoff Tickets
5. New York Red Bulls, 41 Points, 5 Games Remaining – Up Next: Los Angeles (A) – The Red Bulls who drew last week with FCD certainly weren’t the same ones that we’ve seen destroy teams like Colorado and Toronto in recent weeks. There just seemed to be a lack of Steelers jersey
a killer instinct and an inability to bury their 10-man opponents, as well as a significant amount of consternation in handling the speed of the Hoops. The frustration on the offensive end was exacerbated with a terribly poor goal conceded that allowed the Hoops to steal a point. Many will view this week’s match-up with the Galaxy as a potential MLS Cup final preview and let’s call a spade a spade: the league would love for that possibility. While NYRB certainly has the personnel required to complete the worst-to-first turnaround, a more concerted effort, starting in LA, will be required going forward.
Post-Season Looking Likely
6. Colorado Rapids, 37 Points, 6 Games Remaining – Up Next: Real Salt Lake (A) – Currently six points ahead of ninth-place Toronto, the Rapids are going to have to work to retain their standing with the difficult schedule that they have upcoming, including their next, as well as their final, match with holders RSL. What will be heartening for Rapids supporters, though, as four of their remaining six matches are with clubs directly ahead of them. It will certainly not be easy, yet new boy Brian Mullan and company will have the opportunity to not only maintain their hold on the final Western playoff spot, but perhaps move up in the division. With their first post-season appearance in four years a more than realistic possibility, Gary Smith will look to build on the team’s comprehensive victory over the Revs on the weekend and attempt to end RSL’s now 24-match home unbeaten run.
7. San Jose Earthquakes, 36 Points, 7 Games Remaining – Up Next: Toronto (A) – The surprise package of MLS this season, (soon to be Manager of the Year) Frank Yallop’s Earthquakes have the advantage of two games in hand over many of their nearest rivals. What that means, though, is two multi-match weeks in the final five of the season, starting next week with a tough midweek tilt at home with the desperate Fire and then away to Columbus on the weekend. The ‘Quakes have managed respectable road form this season and will need that to continue, as four road matches remain. Unbeaten in three, San Jose will look to make it four in, for all intents and purposes, ending Toronto FC’s season with a win on Saturday.
8. Seattle Sounders, 36 points, 5 Matches Remaining - Up Next: Chicago (A) – Coming off a dominating road victory in Columbus, the next three matches will define the Sounders’ 2010 campaign. In succession, Sigi Schmid’s side faces the three clubs who remain in contention for the final playoff spot currently held by the Sounders: Chicago, Toronto, and Kansas City. Seattle doesn’t need to win all of those matches; they just need to ensure their opposition doesn’t. If the Sounders can minimize the number of points dropped over the next three weeks, then the second-year team can breathe a sigh of relief and not worry about having to wait until the bitter end to clinch their second-consecutive post-season appearance. Get beaten by one or more and a lifeline is handed directly to the still kicking Fire, Reds, and Wizards. Seattle’s playoff fate is entirely up to them.
Barely Breathing
9. Toronto FC, 31 points, 5 Matches Remaining – Up Next: San Jose (H) – If it weren’t for a Herculean effort in the second-half from Dwayne De Rosario on Saturday night in Houston, it would have been curtains for the Reds’ playoff hopes and, after watching their dismal first-half performance, that’s probably the fate they deserved. Merited or not, TFC is still around and a win over the visiting ‘Quakes in one of their final two home matches will go a long way in making next week’s encounter in Seattle still matter. Realistically, though, with a tricky Champions League match in Mexico midweek and the climb well uphill, it seems that another midseason swoon from the Reds will mean another season without playoff soccer in Ontario’s capital.
10. Kansas City Wizards, 30 Points, 7 Matches Remaining – Up Next: Houston (H) – If one of the clubs on the outside looking in has a legitimate shot to still grab a playoff spot, it’s the Wizards. Not only are the sheer number of remaining games on Peter Vermes’ side, but five of the final seven are at CommunityAmerica Ballpark, a place where the Wizards have not lost since late July. Similar to the other clubs with more games left than weeks of the season, KC will have a pair of multi-match weeks and are going to have to toil to overtake TFC and then shift their focus to Seattle, San Jose, and the Rapids. Unbeaten in four, the Wizards seem to be peaking at an opportune time, but is it too late?
11. Chicago Fire, 26 Points, 7 Matches Remaining – Up Next: Seattle (H)- If the Wizards are in ideal form, then the Fire are its polar opposite, winless in six and without influential defender William Conde in their key match-up against the Sounders. Much like TFC, the Fire dropped far too many points in winnable matches and now find themselves up against it. Going into the RSL match, all of the talk from the likes of Carlos De los Cobos and Logan Pause was about Chicago’s need to find “consistency” and it seems like they have found it. Unfortunately, it’s a consistent inability to find victory in must-win matches. Brian McBride’s final season as a pro looks to be an unremarkable one.
There’s Always Next Year
12. Chivas USA, 25 Points, 6 Matches Remaining – Up Next: Philadelphia (A) – It can’t be too much of a shock for Goats supporters to find their club where they are right now. In MLS, you simply cannot lose six matches in succession like CDC did from mid-May to early June and expect to still be relevant as October approaches. The question now surrounding Chivas isn’t about when they’ll be relevant next, but where they might be relevant. Playing at the Padres’ Petco Park a week ago, Chivas drew an impressive 25,000+ for a friendly versus Chivas de Guadalajara. President Shawn Hunter denies any interest in moving south, but even playing a friendly in soccer-mad San Diego certainly has raised eyebrows.
13. New England Revolution, 24 Points, 6 Matches Remaining – Up Next: Dallas (A) – Answer? April 2 in DC. The question: When was the last time the Revs won on the road? It’s not like MLS is a league in which teams generally have good away form, so when you’re classified as a “bad” road team in Major League Soccer, well, that’s pretty awful. The Revs are an awful road team. Every team faces injuries and you hate to use that as a crutch, but with the absolute laundry list of guys on IR this season for New England, you have to think that the Revs’ fortunes would be considerably different if they could stay healthy.
14. Philadelphia Union, 24 Points, 6 Matches Remaining – Up Next: Chivas USA (H) –Maybe the Sounders changed people’s opinions of what an expansion team looks like, but there is no shame whatsoever in the Union’s inaugural season form. They currently sit seven points adrift of the (new) Earthquakes’ 2008 bow and only need a single point from their final matches to match TFC’s 2007 debut. More often than not, mental errors and indiscipline have let Philly down, but there has been a lot of good (namely Sebastien Le Toux’s game-breaking play) to come from this first season.
15. Houston Dynamo, 23 Points, 6 Matches Remaining – Up Next: Kansas City (A) – After Saturday night’s loss to TFC, Dynamo gaffer Dominic Kinnear indicated that his side’s playoff chances were over. He then stated that the Pope was Catholic and that Glenn Beck is a little high-strung. It’s still jarring to see a traditional powerhouse look Houston languishing at the bottom of the table, but in reality, the Dynamo simply hasn’t been very good for a majority of the year. With Brian Ching aging, somebody in that offense is going to need to step up. Brad Davis can’t do it all.
Redskins Update
16. DC United, 17 Points, 5 Games Remaining – Up Next: Houston (H) –Vikings jersey
Despite blowing a 17-point lead against the Texans, Donovan McNabb has already proven to be a steal, throwing for 426 yards and a touchdown on Sunday. Also good news for Mike Shanahan’s 1-1 club is that the MRI on rookie OT Trent Williams was negative and he hasn’t been ruled out for Sunday’s trip to St. Louis.

Mainz stay top of Bundesliga, Ribery injured in Bayern win

Dallas Cowboys jersey
BERLIN (AFP) - Bundesliga leaders Mainz 05 beat Cologne 2-0 on Tuesday to stay top, while Bayern Munich face an anxious wait to hear the extent of Franck Ribery's injury from their late 2-1 win at Hoffenheim.
Having been stunned by a goal after just 36 seconds, Bayern nfl jerseys
hit back as Ribery's fierce long-range shot was followed up by Thomas Mueller on 62 minutes before Munich defender Daniel van Buyten's winner in added time.
But Mueller's equaliser could be costly as Ribery had to be helped off with what looked like a painful ankle injury on 64 minutes as he fell awkwardly after taking his shot.
With Bayern facing Basel in next Tuesday's Champions League match, Munich coach Louis van Gaal will be hoping the Frenchman can face the Swiss side.
"It doesn't look good, it looks like it is a bad ankle injury and we will have to wait and see what the tests show," said a grim-faced van Gaal.
Bayern got off to the worst possible start when they conceded the fastest goal in Hoffenheim's history.
The defending champions were stunned as midfielder Sebastian Rudy beat Munich's defence on the right and squared for Hoffenheim's Veded Ibisevic to score before Bayern hit back.
German daily Bild reported in its Wednesday edition that Van Gaal was set to sign a year's extension to his contract to stay with Bayern until 2012.
Having coached Bayern to the German league and cup titles last season, van Gaal is in his second season with Munich.
"Nothing is signed. All I can say is that we are very happy with the work of San Francisco 49ers jersey
Louis van Gaal," said Bayern's sporting director Christian Nerlinger.
The result in Hoffenheim lifts Bayern up to seventh while the hosts are second.
Mainz picked up their fifth straight win to keep their 100 percent record and open a five-point lead with their win over Cologne.
The hosts took the lead when subsititute midfielder Lewis Holtby's header beat Cologne goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon on 72 minutes before he scored his second in added time.
Champions League side Werder Bremen slumped to their second consecutive league defeat when they were beaten 4-1 at Hanover.
Bremen face defending holders Inter Milan next Wednesday in Italy, but Thomas Schaaf's side are lacking in confidence after following up Saturday's defeat at home to Mainz with this loss in Hanover.
An own-goal by Germany defender Clemens Fritz after just 10 minutes put Bremen on the back foot until captain Torsten Frings converted a penalty after 36 minutes to put his side level.
Hanover reclaimed the lead when Ivory Coast striker Didier Ya Konan scored in the 53rd minute before defender Christian Schulz scored the second on 79 minutes.
To add insult in extra time, Hanover's Norway striker Mohammed Abdellaoue Buffalo Bills jersey
added the fourth to put his side third and Bremen 12th.
In Wednesday's games, bottom side Schalke are at fourth-placed Freiburg and are desperate to avoid their fifth straight defeat.

Rangers routs Dunfermline in Scottish League Cup

Dallas Cowboys jersey
GLASGOW, Scotland (AP)—Kyle Lafferty scored a hat trick as Rangers began its League Cup defense with a 7-2 victory over Dunfermline in the third round on Tuesday.
Nikica Jelavic also scored twice, while Madjid Bougherra and Steven Naismithnfl jersey
each netted for the holders. Callum Woods and Joe Cardle scored for Dunfermline either side of half time.
St. Johnstone advanced by beating Queen of the South 3-0 and Motherwell won 2-0 at Brechin, but Premier League side Hearts lost 4-3 at second-tier Falkirk after seeing defender Craig Thomson sent off.
LISBON, Portugal (AP)—Former Portuguese national team player Chicago Bears jersey
Paulo Bento has been appointed coach of his country’s national team.
The Portuguese Football Federation said in a statement on its website Tuesday that Bento has accepted a contract through to the 2012 European Championship. His only previous senior coaching experience was at Sporting Lisbon from 2005-09.
The 41-year-old replaces Carlos Queiroz, who was fired this month.
The federation tried unsuccessfully to hire Real Madrid’s Jose Mourinho as New Orleans Saints jersey
an interim coach for its next qualifiers, against Denmark on Oct. 8 and Iceland four days later. Portugal is currently fourth in Group H with one point.
Bento made 35 appearances for Portugal as a defensive midfielder before retiring in 2003.

Calcio Debate: As Inter Continue To Struggle On The Road, Is Diego Milito The Answer To The Nerazzurri’s Problems?

Dallas Cowboys jersey
Serie A has once again proven its ability to surprise as Chievo topped the charts last weekend nine years on from Luigi Del Neri’s miracle side which finished an incredible fifth immediately following promotion from Italy’s second flight.
Whilst the regular big four still seem to be starting their nfl throwback jerseys
engines after what has been a less than convincing opening, champions Inter will certainly be satisfied as they look down on their three main rivals who are still playing catch-up despite the Nerazzurri’s moment of transition.
As a number of critics - including yours truly - cast a shadow over Inter’s lack of action on this summer’s transfer market, it appears the biggest blow to the Beneamata juggernaut has in fact been the dip in form of key man Diego Milito. A player who finished the season in such prolific fashion at the end of last term now looks a shadow of his former self following a reserve role during Argentina’s World Cup campaign.
In the wake of scoring an own goal during Inter’s 2-2 draw against Twente in the Champions League, the hitman underlined his hunger for victories by ruling out any joy in picking up a point in the Netherlands.
“It’s not enough to be satisfied,” Milito told SkySport following the game.
“We are half-satisfied, as it’s a draw against a side we knew were going to be tough, but we were a little unlucky on the two goals. At least it’s a good point to start off with.”
Since his arrival back in the peninsula two Bills jersey
years ago, ‘El Principe’ has enjoyed such a strong relationship with the back of the net that his name has constantly remained in the running for Italy’s capocannoniere crown. Such has been his ruthlessness in Nerazzurri colours; very few even noticed the departure of former match-winner Zlatan Ibrahimovic just over 12 months ago.
Ahead of today's clash against Palermo, the Beneamata are still in search of their first victory away from the San Siro this term, and the key could well lie at the feet of the Argentine hitman who is still yet to find the net this term after five competitive matches. With the Rosanero having been somewhat of a disappointment this term, Inter have a golden opportunity to break their duck on the road in a fixture which has proven positive in recent times.
The Biscione faithful will remember the importance of the 1-1 draw at the Renzo Barbera back in March, a game in which Milito himself found the net from the penalty spot. With Milan and Roma both hot on the heels following the Nerazzurri’s defeat to Catania a week earlier, the result displayed the champions’ ability to notch up points even during a period when their form started to wobble.
Whilst Rafael Benitez’s Inter are still very much a side coming to terms with the arrival of their new coach, the Spaniard could well do with a helping hand from the man who so often saw off games for Jose Mourinho.
We still may only be 180 minutes into 49ers jersey
the Serie A campaign and the Beneamata certainly do not need a win at all costs. Nevertheless, should Milito manage to score his first league goal of the season and set up Inter for a result in Sicily, ‘The Prince’ will undoubtedly go a long way to silencing the critics and those who may have prematurely doubted the Nerazzurri juggernaut.

Bad Night Becomes Win For Los Angeles Galaxy

Dallas Cowboys jersey
Landon Donovan perhaps put it best after the match was over and the Galaxy had scored twice in less than 10 minutes.
"There are nights throughout the year when you don’t play well – and we didn’t play well at all – but it’s important to find a way to get something out of the game," Donovan said.
It was Donovan who scored both goals, ensuring the football jerseys
Galaxy victory, and even he seemed stunned by the final result.
"To be honest, after the way we played if we would have gotten a point of the game I would have been ecstatic," Donovan explained. "To win the game is pretty remarkable, but we’ll take it."
Unlike the Galaxy, who are headed to the playoffs with a bullet, D.C. United are all but out. Perhaps, however, this helped focus a team to play better for pride.
"You’ve got to give D.C. a lot of credit," Donovan said. "Not Chargers jersey
only did they play loose and relaxed and aggressively, they actually played well; they moved the ball well."
David Beckham, who played more minutes than last week, appears to be on the injury comeback trail.
"We can't expect to win every game easy," the veteran pointed out. "D.C. came here tonight and they played with the freedom that they’ve got this season and they made it a hard night for us."
Though not directly involved with either goal, Beckham helped the Galaxy open up space for attacks in the second half. Looking back on the match, however, Beckham agreed that the Galaxy had an off night.
"I don’t think our passing was great and our Bears jersey
final ball wasn’t right and when you do that during games you’re always going to struggle," Beckham observed. "We kept it going. The character came through at the end and we have to prove it to people."

Ochoa scores Chiapas treble, Cruz Azul win fifth in row

Dallas Cowboys jersey
MEXICO CITY, Sept 19 (Reuters)H - Striker Carlos Ochoa scored a hat-trick as Jaguares of the revolutionary state of Chiapas ambushed nine-man Guadalajara 3-0 in the Mexican championship.
Former Guadalajara player Ochoa scored after a quarter of nfl jerseys
an hour when he leaped on to a poor back pass and twice more in the dying minutes when the Chivas, Mexico’s most popular team, were down to nine men in Saturday’s match at their Omnilife stadium.
Guadalajara had striker Omar Bravo sent off with a straight red card just past the half hour and Patricio Araujo 13 minutes from time for a second bookable offence.
It was only the second win in eight matches for Chiapas who are bottom of Group Three with nine points.
Cruz Azul notched their fifth win in succession beating Queretaro 3-0 to Indianapolis Colts jersey
open a 10-point lead in Group Three with 21 points from eight matches. They are also three points clear in the overall standings.
“The impression is that we’ve improved, but things don’t stop here, we’ve only played eight fixtures and we’ve got to be wary,” Cruz Azul coach Enrique Meza told reporters.
Argentine forwards Emanuel Villa, with a header, and Maximiliano Biancucchi gave Cruz Azul a 2-0 first-half lead. Adrian Cortes scored the third goal with a free kick in added time.
“The team’s winning, playing well and creating chances which is important but we haven’t achieved anything yet, we’re just on a good run,” said Villa.
Santos Laguna, who beat Necaxa 2-1, and Monterrey, who won 2-0 against one-point Atlas, share the lead in Group One with 18 points apiece.
Atlante won for only the second time, 2-0 at home to Morelia, in their first match under new Argentine coach Eduardo Bacas who has replaced the sacked mexican Isidoro Garcia.
Title holders Toluca were at home to America on Sunday with Dallas Cowboys jersey
both sides looking to snatch the lead in Group Two from San Luis.
The top two teams in each group and the two next best placed sides on points after the 17-match round-robin stage qualify for the knockout phase.

Hughes plans to keep Schwarzer at Fulham

Dallas Cowboys jersey
LONDON (AFP) - Fulham manager Mark Hughes is convinced a new deal will help persuade Australia goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer to stay at Craven Cottage.
Schwarzer was linked with a four-million pound move to Arsenal in nfl jersey
the summer and Hughes knows that once the transfer window reopens in January, the 38-year-old World Cup keeper will once again be a target.
"If we could tie Mark down to a longer contract that would be the ideal for me," said Hughes.
"It might not be an option open to us as he is well within his rights to look at his options in January.
"I want him to stay and would be more comfortable and think Bills jersey
that I have a chance of winning if Mark was playing.
"We hope that he will stay until the end of the season. His immediate future is here. We're pleased with that and will look to January when we have to.
"We are hopeful that we can show him what we want to do and where we want to go. I have made it known to him that I want him to be part of that."
Schwarzer was well received by Fulham fans before Saturday's 2-1 victory over Wolves.
"Mark has made a real mark here and the reception showed the respect for him," said Hughes.
"He's made a real impact at the club and been a part of the whole success here, so that respect was due and was given, which was really good for him."
Hughes was never concerned that Schwarzer would become troublesome after his dream move to Emirates Stadium failed to materialise.
"Mark's a good professional. I knew there wouldn't be any difference in his daily work or the way he approaches games, so it wasn't a worry for me," he said.
"In football you get disappointments more 49ers jersey
than good times, so that's the norm.
"He's got over the initial disappointment so he's getting on with it now.'

Sunderland 'just as big as Braga' for Arsenal manager

Dallas Cowboys jersey
LONDON (AFP) - Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger watched his side beat SC Braga 6-0 in the Champions League on Wednesday and then revealed he expected to dream of nothing but Saturday's trip to Sunderland.
The Frenchman was only half-joking as the Gunners have found it difficult nfl throwback jerseys
to fight on two fronts in recent seasons, although they will travel to the north-east on the back of three straight Premier League successes.
Arsenal have struggled at the Stadium of Light on their last two visits, earning a point with an injury-time Cesc Fabregas goal in 2008 before suffering a 1-0 defeat thanks to Darren Bent's winner last November.
Wenger was hopeful his side, who have not won a major trophy since 2005, would be able to improve on that record in this weekend's match.
"Everywhere we go we try to win," he said. "It will be a big game, but we'll be focused. It's important for our season as well that we're capable of going from Champions League to championship and vice versa.
"From Wednesday night to Saturday it's short but we can rotate a little bit," the manager added.
Wenger's options have been limited to injuries to Robin van Persie, Thomas Vermaelen, Abou Diaby and Theo Walcott but he could freshen up his starting line-up by recalling Tomas Rosicky, Emmanuel Eboue, Denilson or Carlos Vela, who were all on the bench against Braga, with Mexico forward Vela coming on Chargers jersey
and scoring twice.
Sunderland have a formidable home record—they have lost just once, to Manchester United, in the past nine months—and manager Steve Bruce has called on an expected 40,000-plus crowd to create another intimidating atmosphere after supporters played a significant role in last month's 1-0 win over big-spending Manchester City.
"The fans can make all the difference for us," Bruce said. "They certainly did against City, and what an atmosphere it was.
"They've made the Stadium of Light one of the most intimidating places to come for away games and we need to make full use of that advantage. It'd be great to see a packed stadium rocking and I'd urge our fans to get down.
"We'll be trying our level best to put on a show for them.
"Of course it won't be easy but the players are up for the challenge. We know Arsenal are an excellent side but I'm focused on what we do rather than the opposition. When the crowd get going the noise is phenomenal and we need them there in numbers replicating that again this weekend."
Bruce is expected to hand a full debut to 13 million pounds (20 million dollars) record signing Asamoah Gyan, who came off the bench to score at Wigan last week.
Wenger watched the forward score three goals for Ghana in the World Cup finals but had not been tempted to make a bid himself.
"I looked at him, especially in the World Cup," he said. "He had periods at Rennes last season when he didn't play, and others where he was absolutely outstanding. When I watched him in the World Cup I found him interesting and a good player.
"But, at the time, we already had our strikers so I was not looking for him," Wenger explained.
Sunderland are without skipper Lee Bears jersey
Cattermole, who starts a two-match suspension following his second sending off of the season at Wigan.
Defender Michael Turner is sidelined with an ankle problem but Ghana international John Mensah is pushing for a start

Mourinho in search of first La Liga away win

Dallas Cowboys jersey
MADRID (AFP) - Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho goes in search of his first La Liga away win on Saturday when his side travel to unbeaten Real Sociedad.
Mourinho's side were jeered following their narrow 1-0 win over football jerseys
Osasuna at the Santiago Bernabeu but Wednesday's impressive 2-0 Champions League win over Ajax saw the jeers turn to cheers.
Real should have won much more comfortably and have yet to concede in Indianapolis Colts jersey
their three first games under Mourinho.
"I am overjoyed to get bored in goal," said Real goalkeeper Iker Casillas. "We were phenomenal against Ajax and we are making the opposition goalkeeper be their best player as we create so many goalscoring chances."
Real have collected four points from six to sit fifth while Dallas Cowboys jersey
promoted Sociedad, who finished runner-up to Real in the 2003 title race, are above them on goal difference.

Kelly, Irish deal with life after a loss

Cowboys jersey
Brian Kelly hadn't lost a football game since New Year's Day 2009, and he hadn't lost in the regular season in his last 18 tries.
So it was fair to wonder how the nfl jerseys
first-year Notre Dame coach would react to losing to Michigan in just the second week of his tenure. Answer: With a little more tenacity.
"After you lose, you always want the team to be up and energized the next week," receiver Michael Floyd said. "I think there's a little more urgency this week just because we lost. I think he's doing a pretty good job with that and making sure we sustain our energy."
Energy and conditioning were two things Kelly stressed leading into this season. He promised that Notre Dame would play hard for four quarters, be in shape and get back the toughness that epitomized some of the school's best teams. In the immediate wake of the Michigan loss, Kelly said he thought his defense tired as the Wolverines marched on the game-winning drive late in the fourth quarter.
By Tuesday, he had changed his mind on that.
"I think as I watch the film, the coaches watch the film, Chargers jersey
we're in a place where we need to make some plays in that period of time," he said. "I don't know that I'm going to use the excuses anymore of us being tired as much as we need to make plays in those situations. We also have to help our kids to be in position to make some plays as well."
Kelly also said on Sunday that it's not good enough to talk about playing hard for four quarters any more. The Irish have to win games. For years now, it seems, they've been coming up short in big games at the end.
Now along comes Michigan State, which has won nine of the last 13 meetings against the Irish. The game will be at night (ABC, 8 ET) in front of a hostile environment. The Spartans are sure to play a more physical style than Purdue or Michigan brought to South bend.
"It's football at its finest," linebacker Manti Te'o said. "It's smash-mouth football. And Michigan State is really good at that."
For Kelly -- who will compete against the man he succeeded at Cincinnati in Mark Dantonio -- it's too early to call this a crossroads kind of game. But call it a small fork in the road. A loss would leave the Irish at 1-2, meaning they'd basically have to win all the rest of their games to make a BCS bowl. Critics would also point out that Charlie Weis and Tyrone Willingham got off to better starts than that.
Kelly insists he's not worried about that sort of thing.
"There will be plenty of Bears jersey
room on the bandwagon, too, when we start winning," he said. "(Look, this is a process for me and our coaches and our players that we're going to work at every single day. Those are expectations in this business that you're going to have each and every day. (I don't spend much time dwelling on that other than the fact that we have to play the game better, and that's what my focus is on."
Losing is an unfamiliar feeling for Kelly. He and the Irish hope he won't get to know it better after this week.

Northwestern's Dan Persa right on target

Cowboys jersey
Dan Persa's 86.4 percent completion ratio so far this season doesn't surprise Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald.
Fitzgerald sees this all the time from the Wildcats' nfl jersey
junior quarterback.
Asked Tuesday if Persa passes the ball as accurately in practice as he does in games, Fitzgerald flipped through his notes from the team's workout earlier that morning.
"We just got off the field and he threw for 92 percent in seven-on-seven," Fitzgerald said. "And in team [drills], he threw for 88 percent.
"So yeah, he's pretty consistent."
Persa opened the season by completing 19 of 21 passes for 222 yards and three touchdowns in a road win against Vanderbilt. He set a single-game team record for completion percentage (90.5 percent, minimum 20 attempts) and added 82 rush yards.
Last Saturday, Persa took a huge step back. He only completed 82.6 percent of his throws (19-for-23) in about a half of work against Illinois State.
On-target passing combined with five touchdown strikes and no interceptions has helped Persa lead the nation in pass efficiency with a rating of 212.1.
"It's just all about your confidence," Persa told me earlier this week. "Once it becomes second nature, you don't really think about making mistakes. You just think about getting the ball to [the receivers] as quick as you can and watch what they do with it."
Persa is only two games into his stint as Northwestern's full-time starter and entered the year with only 34 career pass attempts (20 completions). His fast start is Indianapolis Colts jersey
linked to his ability to maximize the offseason, whether it was earning team awards for his weight-room prowess, working with former Northwestern quarterback Brett Basanez on his skills or leading voluntary workouts with his receivers.
Northwestern's spread offense is built around high-percentage passes, some of which coordinator Mick McCall considers the equivalent to run plays. Most of Persa's throws don't travel very far, but the execution needs to be there on both ends.
"Some are short, easy passes," Persa said, "but at the same time, we work really hard in the offseason and in fall camp to get our timing right. It's really showing right now."
Northwestern enjoyed similar accuracy with All-Big Ten quarterback Mike Kafka in 2009.
Kafka led Big Ten starters in completion percentage (64.8). He completed his first 16 passes against Syracuse, breaking a 47-year-old team record, and finished the game 35-for-42 (83.3 percent).
Persa has continued the pattern.
"I just try to make all the throws that I'm capable of," he said. "You're going to have some incompletions, just because sometimes you've got to throw the ball away or sometimes, you have to save yourself. I'm not really focused on making or missing passes as much as executing and getting the job done."
Fitzgerald said there's only one throw Persa would like to have back so far this season, a pass that sailed through the hands of a Vanderbilt linebacker and into those of Northwestern receiver Demetrius Fields.
So even when Persa messes up, he still Dallas Cowboys jersey
completes the pass. Figures.
"He's managed it outstanding," Fitzgerald said. "I don't know if he could have done a better job in the first two games. ... He's a great fit to our offense. He can do everything: He can run, he can throw the quick game, he can throw on the move, he can throw the ball vertically.

McCluster in, Merriman out

Pittsburgh Steelers jersey

KANSAS CITY -- Kansas City rookie running back/receiver Dexter McCluster is active for Kansas City and he is expected to play Monday night against San Diego.
McCluster, a second-round pick was listed as doubtful on cheap nfl jerseys
the injury report Saturday with an unspecified illness.
Right tackle Ryan O'Callaghan is Dallas Cowboys jersey
inactive and Barry Richardson is expected to replace him.
As expected, San Diego linebacker Shawne Merriman is inactive with an Achilles problem. He has practiced very little since being hurt in mid-August. Larry English is expected to start at linebacker. Backup quarterback Billy Volek is active. He missed much of Minnesota Vikings jersey
the past week with a knee injury.
Rookie Cam Thomas is among San Diego’s inactive players.

Rapid Reaction: Ravens 10, Jets 9

Pittsburgh Steelers jersey

What it means: The Ravens picked up a huge road victory against another AFC contender. It's just one game. But considering the hype and trash talk -- most of it coming from the Jets -- it was a nice statement for Baltimore to start its 2010 season.
What I liked: As usual, Baltimore's defense carried the Ravens for four quarters. Despite turnovers by the offense and bad field position, the Ravens kept the Jets out of the end zone and that made the difference. New York quarterback Mark Sanchez looked confused by football jersey
the Ravens all night, and Baltimore's front seven was stout against the run.
What I didn't like: Baltimore's much-hyped and new-look offense failed to score many points in its 2010 debut. Yes, the Ravens were playing against last year's No. 1 defense. But -- for the most part -- sloppy play, penalties and poor execution kept the Ravens' offense grounded. There were some flashes, such as a stellar debut by new Ravens receiver Anquan Boldin (seven catches, 110 yards). But there is plenty of Indianapolis Colts jersey
room for growth for this talented unit.
Injuries of note: There were no major injuries in the game for Baltimore. But starting cornerback Lardarius Webb, who had offseason knee surgery, practiced all week and didn’t play Monday. He could be a possibility for next week and would be a nice addition to Baltimore’s secondary.
What's next: The Ravens' win takes some of Minnesota Vikings jersey
the pressure off next week, when they have their first division game of the season against the Cincinnati Bengals. The defending AFC North champion Bengals will be trying to avoid an 0-2 start after losing to the New England Patriots. Cincinnati swept the division in 2009, and, lately, has had Baltimore's number when Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer is healthy.

Rapid Reaction: Ravens 10, Jets 9

Pittsburgh Steelers jersey

What it means: With so much hype building throughout the summer about the Jets and their lofty aspirations, they made a disappointing first impression. The Jets failed to score a touchdown, couldn't get their defense off the field, were amazingly sloppy and failed to capitalize on three nfl jersey
first-half turnovers.
With the New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins winning on Sunday, the Jets are a game behind in the AFC East race. That might not sound significant with 15 games remaining, but a loss in September means the same as a loss in December.
What I liked: The run defense was stellar. They limited the vaunted Ravens' backfield of Ray Rice, Willis McGahee and Le'Ron McClain to 47 yards on 31 carries.
For all their foibles on both sides of scrimmage, the Jets never let the game get away from them. They stayed in the game with aggressive defense and sensational special-teams play. Jim Leonhard had two punt returns for 54 yards.
I loved what I saw out of Dallas Cowboys jersey
Joe Flacco, especially after he almost got decapitated on his first play and particularly for what he did on third down. He completed nine of his 14 attempts on third down for 137 yards. Every completion gained a first down.
What I didn't like: New York's offense was pathetic. They couldn't run. They couldn't throw. They couldn't convert third downs. They couldn't kneel out the first half clock without getting flagged for too many men on the field. They failed to convert a single third down until their final possession.
At the end of the game, I looked at Mark Sanchez's stats on my laptop thought "I must've forgotten to hit refresh since the second quarter." Nope. Sanchez went into his last possession 7-of-14 for 47 yards. He finished 10-of-21 for 74 yards.
Shonn Greene had a rough night. He fumbled twice in the first half (he lost one) and dropped a critical pass with about five minutes left in the game and the Jets still trying to find traction. Greene finished with five carries for 18 yards.
The Jets should be even more ecstatic to have Darrelle Revis in uniform because the two cornerbacks who were supposed to cover for him until he returned -- Antonio Cromartie and Kyle Wilson -- were picked on. Flacco hit several big plays against both. Cromartie had three costly penalties to give the Ravens first downs. Flacco was 20-of-38 for 248 yards -- against last year's top-rated pass defense.
Trending: The Jets were obnoxiously undisciplined. They committed 10 penalties for 100 yards in the first half alone. They gave up six first downs on penalties, allowing the Ravens to break a franchise record. For the game, the Jets were flagged 14 times for 125 yards. That better not be a systemic problem for the Jets.
Unsung hero: Punter hasn't been a major strength for the Jets in a while, but Steve Weatherford was great Monday night. He pinned the Ravens inside the 15-yard line four times and inside the 5-yard line twice.
Injuries of Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
note: The Jets lost star nose tackle Kris Jenkins on their second defensive possession to a knee injury. He slowly walked off the field under his own power, just as he did last year, when he sustained a season-ending knee injury in the sixth game.
What's next: On a short week, the Jets have to get ready for the Patriots, who showed Sunday they're still a force to be reckoned with by crushing the Cincinnati Bengals 38-24.

Steelers jersey

Ajax midfielder Evander Sno has been taken to hospital after suffering a suspected heart attack during a reserve match.
It has been confirmed that Sno, 23, collapsed on the field after 63 minutes of nfl throwback jerseys
Monday's game against Vitesse Arnhem and was taken to a hospital nearby.
Sno, who has previously played for Celtic and spent time on Indianapolis Colts jersey
loan with Bristol City last season, was resuscitated on the pitch by the medical staff of both clubs. A defibrillator had to be used three times and the official Vitesse website says this "probably saved Sno's life".
The match was then called off, and Vitesse chairman Ted van Leeuwen said the player was in a stable condition when the ambulance arrived to take him away from the stadium.
An Ajax spokesman said: "He is now conscious. Evander is breathing again and can now talk again."
Several footballers have died of Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
heart attacks in recent years, including Marc-Vivien Foe, Antonio Puerta and Dani Jarque.

Former tight end Ron Kramer dead at 75

Cowboys jersey

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP)—Former Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions tight end Ron Kramer has died at age 75.
The University of Michigan said Kramer died Saturday at nfl jerseys
his home. It did not release the cause of death.
Kramer caught two TD passes from Bart Starr in Green Bay’s 1961 NFL championship victory over the New York Giants. He had his most productive season in 1962 with 37 receptions for 555 yards and seven touchdowns and was an All-Pro.
Kramer spent seven seasons with the Packers after being drafted in the first round with the fourth overall pick in 1957. He did not play in 1958, when he joined the Air Force while recovering from a leg injury suffered at the end of his rookie season. He finished his career with three seasons in Detroit, the city where he grew up, retiring after the 1967 season.
Lions President Tom Lewand said in a statement that Kramer was one of the city’s most accomplished athletes.
“It was so fitting that Ron ended his prestigious career playing for his hometown team,” Lewand said. “He will be dearly missed.”
Kramer earned three letters each in football, basketball and track at Michigan and led the Wolverines in scoring for two seasons in football.
His No. 87 is one of just five numbers retired by the school in Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
football. He played offensive and defensive end, running back, quarterback, kicker and receiver.
“He called me after every loss, and that meant a lot because it’s a lonely feeling to lose when you’re the coach at Michigan,” former Wolverines coach Lloyd Carr said Saturday night. “I’ll never forget that he used to bring our team apples because he remembered somebody doing that for him when he played at Michigan.”
As a basketball player, Kramer scored 1,119 points and was the team’s Most Valuable Player as a junior. He set the school’s all-time scoring record as team captain his senior year with 1,124 points, a standard that stood until 1961.
Despite his 230-pound frame, he competed in the high jump in track.
“Ron was one of the great Michigan athletes of the 20th century,” Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon said in a statement released by the university.
After retiring, he operated Ron Kramer Industries in Fenton, Mich., about 35 miles north of Ann Arbor.
Kramer was elected to the Michigan Sports Hall of Dallas Cowboys jersey
Fame in 1971. In 1981, he was named a recipient of the NCAA’s Silver Anniversary Award in recognition of significant professional and civic contributions spanning 25 years after completion of his collegiate eligibility.
He was born June 24, 1935, in Girard, Kan., and his family moved to the Detroit area when he was 5.
Details on funeral arrangements weren’t immediately available.

Report: Haynesworth will play Sunday vs. Cowboys

Cowboys jersey

Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan has decided that defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth(notes) will play in the season opener against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, a source tells ESPN.
The source said Haynesworth has been told he will play mostly on nfl jersey
passing downs, rushing from an inside position. He Minnesota Vikings jersey
could start the game if the Cowboys open with a three-receiver set.
How much Haynesworth will play depends on how well he performs and how the game progresses. “It could be five plays or 35 plays,” the source told the network.
Haynesworth had a troubled training camp and Indianapolis Colts jersey
preseason, first being unable to pass a conditioning test amid a rocky relationship with Shanahan, then experiencing dehydration.

Lions glad to have versatile Havner

Cowboys jersey

Here are some of the whispers we've been hearing around the NFC North this week:
The Lions love their new Swiss Army knife, Spencer Havner(notes). He's being tried at linebacker — the position he's listed at on their roster — but also can play tight end (four of his seven receptions with the Packers last season were touchdowns) and fullback. The Lions think he can be a do-it-all player, including his expected work on nfl throwback jerseys
special teams, and it doesn't hurt that he came from a division rival, either.
Husain Abdullah(notes) is the Vikings' starting strong safety going forward. So said head coach Brad Childress following the team's Week One loss to the Saints. Many thought Abdullah would be a placeholder at the spot because his better-than-average coverage skills would help make up for the lack of healthy cornerbacks on the roster for the game. But Childress appeared to back Abdullah going forward over Tyrell Johnson(notes) and Jamarca Sanford(notes), who spent most of Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
the summer battling for the starting spot.
According to our Packers sources, the turning point in the neck-and-neck battle for the starting punter job between winner Tim Masthay(notes) and Australian Chris Bryan(notes) was a punt by Masthay in the third preseason game against Indianapolis that had a jaw-dropping 5.06-second hang time and triggered a punt-return fumble by the Colts.
The Bears demoted QB Indianapolis Colts jersey
Caleb Hanie(notes) to third string when they signed QB Todd Collins(notes), but a source wouldn't rule out the two players switching spots on the depth chart when Hanie is completely recovered from a shoulder injury.
We're told Packers rookie free-agent C-OG Nick McDonald(notes)'s toughness probably earned him a surprise roster spot. Daily team observers tell us McDonald just never quit in camp and was duly rewarded.

Pick Your Real Madrid Team: Cristiano Ronaldo And Pepe Included In Squad To Face Osasuna

Cowboys jersey

Real Madrid winger Cristiano Ronaldo has been included in Jose Mourinho’s squad for the match versus Osasuna at the Santiago Bernabeu this weekend.
The Portuguese picked up an ankle knock in the opening day football jersey
0-0 draw with Mallorca, and subsequently was forced to withdraw from international duty, with a three-week time frame for recovery initially expected.
The player himself said earlier this week that he hoped to be fit in time for the midweek Champions League clash versus Ajax, but it now seems that the club doctors have deemed Ronaldo to be fit enough to take his place in the los Blancos squad for their first home league match of the season.
Another surprise inclusion is Pepe, who is welcomed into a Blancos squad for the first time since December 2009 after recovering from his knee injury.

The squad list in full is as follows:

Goalkeepers: Casillas, Dudek Minnesota Vikings jersey
and Adam
Defenders: Carvalho, Sergio Ramos, Pepe, Marcelo, Arbeloa y Mateos

Midfielders: Khedira, L. Diarra, Granero, Xabi Alonso, Canales, Pedro León, Di María, Özil

Attackers: Cristiano Ronaldo, Benzema, Higuaín.
Goal.com asks you to leave your choices in the comments feature below, using hyphens to separate positions, working from right to left.
This for example could be Real Madrid's Dallas Cowboys jersey
possible line-up, in a 4-2-3-1 formation:
Casillas – Ramos, Carvalho, Pepe, Marcelo – Xabi Alonso, L. Diarra – Di Maria, Canales, Ronaldo – Higuain

Official: Bobby Zamora Signs New Four-Year Deal At Fulham

Cowboys jersey

Fulham have today confirmed that striker Bobby Zamora has signed a new contract at the club that will see him stay at Craven Cottage until 2014.

The England striker's current deal was set to expire at the end of nfl jersey
the season and other clubs have been linked Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
with possible moves for the former Brighton & Hove Albion man.

"Fulham Football Club can confirm that Bobby Zamora has signed a new four year deal with the Club that will see the striker remain at the Cottage until the summer of 2014," a statement on the club's official reads.

The 29-year-old has capped a fine 12 months Dallas Cowboys jersey
for him with the new deal, after winning his first full cap for England in August against Hungary at Wembley.

Who Will Be The Next England Manager? The Early Contenders

Cowboys jersey

With Fabio Capello’s announcement he will leave his post as England manager after the 2012 European Championships, the bookies instantly gave odds to a lengthy list of candidates.

With questions over whether the next manager should be English, nfl jerseys
Goal.com looks at the possible contenders for the job once described as a "poisoned chalice" by Sir Alex Ferguson.
Current job: Tottenham manager

Contract: Signed extension this summer until June 2013.

Key achievements: Guided Portsmouth to FA Cup glory in 2008. Led Tottenham into the Champions League in 2010.

Possible stumbling blocks: His career has been dogged with corruption allegations, which he strongly denies.

What he says: "I've always said if you're an Englishman, it would be hard to turn it down, because it's the pinnacle of your career."

What Goal.com UK says: Harry Redknapp's stock has risen over the past few years and he is known for getting the best out of young players, so the England role could be perfect for him. His fiery temperament could be a set back and the corruption associations may leave him susceptible to press denigration.

Betting odds: 11/4 favourite Current job: Liverpool manager

Contract: Signed a three-year deal with the club in the summer.

Key achievements: Won five Swedish Championships in a row with Malmo. Has vast managerial experience across the world. Led Fulham to last year’s Europa League final.

Possible stumbling blocks: Despite his experience he has yet to win a significant honour with a household name.

What he says: [When quizzed about the England job over the summer] "There was never a question of: 'should I hold on, should I hedge my bets for something different' because I want to be here … all other thoughts of Minnesota Vikings jersey
jobs went out of my mind."

What Goal.com UK says: Roy Hodgson is a few months into a job that he described as "the biggest job in club football" and is unlikely to jump ship to manage England. He made a name for himself at Fulham, but has not shown the overwhelming winning mentality needed to galvanise a dismal England team. Has a good rapport with any team he manages. Current job: Unattached after resigning in acrimonious circumstances from Aston Villa last month.

Key achievements: Won the League Cup twice with Leicester City. Led Celtic to two Scottish League and Cup doubles along with another SPL title and Scottish Cup victory. Managed Celtic to the final of the Uefa Cup in 2003. League Cup runners-up in 2010 with Aston Villa.

Possible stumbling blocks: Is seen by some to have too little experience at the top level needed to lead a national team. He has had a number of high-profile disputes with playing and management staff, most recently with former boss Randy Lerner. Not the perfect warm-up for dealing with the FA.

What he says: "In the England job? I think I'd be brilliant. I do, I honestly do. It's self-effacing, but I do, yeah. My ego thinks I'd be good at it. But the rest of me… actually the rest of me thinks I'd be brilliant at it as well."

What Goal.com UK says: England should be Indianapolis Colts jersey
champing at the bit to make O’Neill the next England manager. He has turned Gareth Barry and James Milner into England stalwarts and has watched Ashley Young and (to a lesser extent) Gabriel Agbonlahor blossom. His man management, intelligence and composure are reasons enough for him to replace Capello. Plus there will be no haggling with a club for compensation if they secure him now.

Corruption case against former Nigeria FA chiefs adjourned

Steelers jersey

LAGOS (AFP) - The corruption case brought against four former officials of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has been adjourned until October 5.

the World Cup after the first round.
The officials were first quizzed by EFCC in July. They have been in detention since Monday.
